How to Keep your Body Alkaline

As 2010 comes to a close, I hope it was a healthy year and you are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. I know I have so much to be thankful for and so much to look forward to in 2011.

Each of us has a path we can take — the illness path or the wellness path. The choices we make determine whether we’re headed for illness or for wellness. We are in charge of our own body. We determine what to consume. We decide if we are going to challenge our bodies by exercising. We are constantly making choices — one choice is just as easy to make as another choice. Still, over a period of time, one will lead to better health and one will lead to your doctor’s office. Which will it be for you?

One of the ways to keep your body free of diseases is to keep it in an alkaline state. I’ve heard it many times — diseases cannot live in an alkaline body. How do you keep your body in an alkaline state? By consuming more alkaline foods than acidic ones. Approximately 75 percent of your food intake should be alkaline and about 25 percent should be acidic. So, a lot more alkaline foods than acidic ones. This helpful chart at puts the alkaline-forming foods on a scale from low to high.

There are various places where you can buy pH paper such as a garden center or pet shop or even one that sells swimming pool supplies. If you want one that covers a wider gamut, you may need to find a lab supply store.
Personally, to keep my body alkaline, I take a “greens” supplement with every meal. What I like about this company is that their multi-vitamin is also packed with a “greens” caplet. I also drink alkaline water. I was recently tested by a health practitioner and my body was in an alkaline state. This is not to say that I leave the job to the supplements. I do try to make smart choices about what I eat.

I wish all of you the best of health. Take care and see you next year.

Drug Interactions

I saw a small article in my favorite Prevention magazine about a deadly drug interaction between acid-reflux reducing drugs such as Prilosec or Nexium and blood thinner Plavix. There’s a 50% higher risk of suffering a cardiac event, according to a study by lead author David Flockhart, MD, PhD at Indiana University. Just imagine, you’ve been on Plavix for a long time and you go to the doctor for heartburn so the busy doctor innocently prescribes the purple pill, Nexium. Perhaps you play the coupon game like I do … I go to the pharmacy that will offer me a gift card for a new prescription which is probably not where your Plavix prescription is located.

Pharmacists are equally busy and even if all of your prescriptions were at one pharmacy, I don’t know if they would look at your list and counsel you if there were possible dangerous interactions involved … or even call your doctor. I very much doubt it. Hence, it would behoove you to be your own advocate and be aware of the possible consequences, particularly if you have a long list of prescription drugs like many seniors do.

I found many Web sites for checking for drug interactions, but I particularly liked this one: Not only do they list the interactions with other drugs, but it also gives you food/lifestyle interactions and disease interactions. In the case of Nexium, for example, it does matter whether or not you take it with food or on an empty stomach.

Fiber: Soluble vs. Insoluble

We’ve all heard that fiber is important, but did you know that there’s more to fiber than just fiber? As we get older, one of the problems could be a rise in cholesterol and some of us take extra fiber to keep our cholesterol in check. Here’s more information about fiber.

  • Soluble Fiber
    • Examples: oat bran, barley, nuts, seeds, legumes (beans, lentils, peas), some fruits (bananas, blueberries) and vegetables (artichokes, carrots)
    • Effect: slows digestion (attracts water and turns to gel during digestion)
    • Benefit: may lower cholesterol
  • Insoluble Fiber
    • Examples: wheat bran, vegetables, whole grains
    • Effect: adds bulk to the stool

    • Benefit: helps food pass more quickly through the stomach and intestines

A few months ago, I wrote a post: Cold Relief — Can Ionic Silver Help? Recently in the media, there has been negative press about colloidal silver with possible dangers cited as being bluish skin, mucous membrane discoloration, neurological problems, and liver damage. Yes, colloidal silver can cause those problems. But that’s colloidal silver. So this article looks at colloidal silver vs. ionic silver — what you should know.

According to B. J. Biagioli, NMD, developer of IS Defense, ionic silver does not cause anyone to turn blue. Biagioli is a Naturopathic Medical Doctor with additional degrees in Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and a Masters Degree in Electronics Engineering from MIT. He says colloidal silver is not effective in killing viruses, germs, and fungi and should never be used internally or externally. On the other hand, germs cannot survive in an environment of ionic silver.

IS Defense is the culmination of years of study and research by Dr. Biagioli and a team of engineers and chemists he formed in 1994. Equipment for medical use developed and produced by him has led the field for decades, but he considers his Premium Ionic Silver Solution to be his crowning achievement!

In a recent tele-conference with Dr. Biagioli, he mentioned a variety of uses for ionic silver. They include the following:

  • Scars
  • Pink eye and other infections
  • Deodorant
  • E. coli, stomach ulcers
  • Cuts, scrapes or anything that breaks the skin
  • Age spots
  • Plants
  • Animals
  • Hand sanitizer

He cited a case where, after two years, acne scars disappeared. He noticed the effects after a couple of months; the craters were getting shallower. The end result was that his patient now looked under 30. In another case of a person with a scar across the neck, after 90 days he could hardly see the scar and after six months, it was gone.

With animals, you can spray the food to prevent cross-contamination between dogs and cats. Also, you can add one to two ounces in water, depending on the size of the animal. A cat which had an upper respiratory problem got well. White line disease on hooves of horses disappeared.

According to Dr. Biagioli, no alcohol based hand sanitizer works unless you rub it in long enough to kill the germs. With ionic silver, it is almost instantaneous and it lasts longer.

Finally in this tele-conference call, he said that colloidal silver will not kill malaria, but ionic silver will. Most people are interested in keeping healthy (although a few don’t care). Some people use IS Defense as a preventive measure and some people use it as soon as they feel something coming on. To use it as the latter, there is a certain regimen to follow and I will be happy to e-mail you the instructions —

To your health!

Best OTC Painkillers

Last week the Washington Post had an article in its Wellness section — Choosing the right painkiller doesn’t have to be such a headache. Since I had just talked about natural alternatives in my last post, I thought this was a good follow-up. Notice the row, Be careful if. Yes, there are side effects even with common over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. If the chart is not clear, please click on it and it will open in a new window.

It is important to understand your own body. Take control. Research natural alternatives. For example, the other day I twisted my knee slightly and was uncomfortable. So I gave my knee a Cellular Response energy healing treatment and doubled up on my glucosamine/chondroitan/msm (click here). I also used an all-natural topical analgesic (click here). The next day I was back at the gym.

Remember, there are side effects to even over-the-counter medications. Before you reach for one, see if there are any natural alternatives that might help.

Natural Alternatives to Health and Healing

Last week I was on a panel at the luncheon of the Women’s Network of Springfield. The title of the panel was: Smart Women Make Smart Choices. The other two panelists  were Elaine Gibson of B/B Envirosystems and Lynne Porzel of The Intuitive Healing Center. I talked about natural alternatives to health and healing.

Here is my part of the discussion:

I want to talk about two areas of  your health: Medications and Healing Naturally. Last month a distant relative a couple of years younger than I, died. She had been having sleeping problems and taking sleeping pills. We thought she had overdosed on the pills, but she actually committed suicide by jumping off a balcony. Thoughts of suicide is a side effect of sleeping pills.

All drugs have side effects. Have you ever noticed TV and radio commercials have a long section on possible side effects where they ramble them very quickly? The effect might be minor or they might be major. If there are side effects from the first medication, doctors sometimes prescribe a second medication to counteract the side effects of the first medication. The doctor won’t tell you this, but the side effect might be that the medication is depleting  you of nutrients. Click here.

You are in charge of your own body: You can take the illness path or the wellness path. I believe smart women will take the wellness path.

I encourage you to take charge of your body and not fill your body with medicines. I have an 82-year old neighbor with Parkinson’s disease. He is always complaining about being tired and having no energy. He does not give his body any nutritional supplements; only a half dozen prescription medications. No wonder he’s tired.

Acid reflux is a common problem and many doctors prescribe Nexium, the purple pill. Well, it’s habit forming. There are natural alternatives. You can drink alkaline water or sleep on a wedge pillow.

You’re a smart woman. Make smart choices about your health and what you will put in your body.

Second, I want to talk about healing naturally. I want to announce that I will be starting an energy healing practice later this year and together with my nutritional supplement business, I will be practicing my passion of making people well naturally.

I thought energy healing would be something I’d like to do after hearing about some amazing results, but to be sure (since I’d never worked on anyone before), I had my hands analyzed by Peggie Arvidson and she confirmed that I am a gifted healer. Hence, I took the plunge started training in Cellular Response — light touch energy healing where the body heals itself. It has been the most rewarding thing that I’ve ever done. Recently, I “saved” someone from having surgery for stomach problems. Just before going into the operating room, the doctor checked her stomach and declared that she did not need the surgery. She was elated. The only thing that had changed was that she had the Cellular Response energy healing.

I have been practicing on volunteers since November and I am looking for more volunteers. I may or may not be able to help. (If you are in the Washington, DC Metro Area, you can contact me at 703.825.8384 or e-mail me at

In conclusion, I hope this panel will make you realize that you have to make your health your top priority. If you don’t make the time to take care of yourself now, you can be sure that illness will steal your time later.

Alkaline Water

You may or may not have heard of companies marketing water ionizers which make water more alkaline. By drinking ionized water, the acidity which corrodes body tissue is lowered and hence illness would be reduced. That’s the claim, but is it important for our body to be in a more alkaline state than an acidic one?

Let’s go back to high school (or was it elementary school?) science. On the pH scale, alkalinity runs from zero to 14. Seven (7) is neutral, >7 is alkaline, <7 is acidic. Our blood is generally slightly alkaline with a pH between 7.35 and 7.45. Our body strives to maintain a balanced pH level and when the balance is compromised, problems can occur.  Also, as we get older, our pH balancing system gets less efficient. A body that’s too alkaline is rare; one that is too acidic is very common. For example, how many people do you know that have heartburn or acid reflux — problems with too much acid produced by the stomach.

One of the problems that many seniors face is that of being on too many prescription drugs. Drugs have many unwanted side effects and additionally deplete nutrition as I pointed out in a previous post. Perhaps alkaline water, rather than drugs, can help solve some of the problems.

A blog post on the popular osteoporosis drug, Fosomax, says that the secret to preventing osteoporosis could be alkalinity. According to, in research presented in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2004, alkaline-forming foods were found to build strong bones and prevent both risk of fracture and osteoporosis, while acid-forming foods were found to increase bone loss, risk of fracture, and osteoporosis. According to a study in the 2003 journal Neoplasma, acid-forming soft drinks, alcohol, and coffee proved to be statistically significant risk factors for cancer. Click here to see a partial list of alkaline and acid-forming foods. Another list from is here.

According to the NIH, calcium intake along with vitamin D can help maintain body alkalinity and prevent osteoporosis. This post gives you the  recommended daily intake of calcium.

Published in 1991, the author of Alkalize or Die says:

The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause…too much tissue acid waste in the body!
Theodore A. Baroody, N.D., D.C., Ph.D.

Personally, I drink at least 8 ounces of alkaline water a day. I use a product called VitaWater mixing an ounce with 1 gallon of distilled water and drinking it as is or making my cup of green tea with it. Not only is it an alkalizing agent, I use it for burns, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and for my plants as well. For more information, click here.

Sticky: Sun Protection with Oral Supplements

We constantly hear about protecting our skin from the sun. But sun protection with an oral supplement? In a previous post on skin agers, it was mentioned that your sunblock/sunscreen should cover both UVA and UVB rays. Mark A. Stengler, NMD, also recommends that skin be protected from the inside as well. He says dietary supplements that contain beta-carotene or mixed carotenoids (beta carotene + lycopene and lutein) will help protect the skin from harmful UV radiation.

The dosage that Dr. Stengler recommends is as follows: 24 milligrams of beta carotene or 25,000 international units (IU) of a mixed carotenoid. Alternatively, he says you can take FernBlock, an oral supplement made from fern extract and herbs. The dosage is as follows: two capsules daily in the morning, 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and one capsule at noon.

Heliocare is another product that claims to help maintain the skin’s ability to protect against sun-related effects and aging. Read a review of FernBlock and Heliocare here.

Important: Supplements are not a replacement for sunscreen/sunblock.

Upon reading this in my Bottom Line Personal periodical, I went to check the ingredients in my vitamin supplement. VitaOne is my vitamin of choice when traveling because everything I need is conveniently packaged. When I’m at home, however, I take a vitamin designed for seniors … a heart vitamin to clean the arteries of plaque. Click here for more information.

If swallowing big pills is a problem, be sure to read this post. Click here.

As seniors, don’t you want to fool everyone with your age? I do. So don’t forget to protect your skin!
